Culture ministry works to recover audiovisual archives from Eastern European countries

ALGIERS- Minister of Culture, Azzedine Mihoubi, on Wednesday in Algiers said that his ministry worked to recover the Algerian audiovisual archives which are notably in the Eastern European countries as well as the film archives about the Liberation War.
While inaugurating, in the National Library of El Hama, an exhibition on historical documents recently purchased in auction in Toulouse (France), the minister added that this department aims at recovering the distorted memory."
The minister stressed the importance of those audiovisual archives and photos, with regard to the films that include valuable information on the daily life of the Algerians in that time.
The archives recovered last 31 March contain books and documents, he revealed, adding that the Algerian film industry could benefit from those archives, which hold information ad photos on the Algerian cities at that time.
The Culture Minister, together with Religious Affairs Minister Mohamed Aissa, inspected several exhibited documents including books, manuscripts and photos dating back to the Ottoman era and the first years of French occupation. The number of these documents is estimated at 600, including valuable books containing important information about Algeria.
A book in two volumes about the life of Emir Abdelkader, written by a French general who attests to the Emir's struggle against the occupation is among the archives. These two volumes were estimated, alone, at €1,500. However, the amount of archives recovered €90,000, according to the statements of the minister.
