Malek Bensmail's "Contre-pouvoirs" at 27th Cascade Festival of African Films in US

PORTLAND- The documentary film “Contre-pouvoirs” (Checks and Balances) by Algerian filmmaker Malek Bensmail will be screened at the 27th Cascade Festival of African Films which will be held until March 4 in Portland (US), said the event’s organizers on the festival’s website.
"Contre-pouvoirs," an Algerian-French co-production, will be screened in the English version under the title “Checks and Balances” alongside films from Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt, among others.
Released in 2016, this 97-minute documentary film focuses on the work of journalists in the 2014’s presidential elections in Algeria.
Screened only once in Algeria at the 13th Film Meetings of Bejaia, “Checks and Balances” participated in several film events particularly in Europe and the United States of America.
It was also screened at the 26th Carthage Film Days in Tunisia and the International Film Festival of Tetouan in Morocco where it was awarded.
A total of 25 films from about fifteen countries, including “As I open My Eyes” from Tunisia, "La Isla" (Morocco), “Eye of the Storm” (Burkina Faso), are to be screened in this event which kicked off on February 3.
