Algeria's Economic and Cultural Week in Washington D.C, US, in September
Algeria's economic and cultural Week 2018 in US will be held from 4 to 7 September 2018 in Washington D.C, Algerian-American Business Council President Ismael Chikhoune said in Algiers.
To encourage Algerian economic operators to participate in this event, an information day was organized Wednesday March 7th, 2018, in Algiers, by the National Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Trade (ALGEX) and the USABC, in collaboration with the Embassy of Algeria in Washington D.C.
This day aims to make Algerian exporters aware of the export opportunities to the US market and to create a commercial and industrial partnership between Algeria and US, said ALGEX CEO Chafik Chiti.
According to him, it is part of the process of laying the foundations for genuine cooperation between the two countries, in order to give meaning to the efforts made by the two governments and give greater visibility to Algerian and American economic operators.
This day has thus helped to enlighten the Algerian and American business community on business opportunities and industrial partnerships between the two countries. To highlight export opportunities to the US market, Mr. Chiti said that between 2012 and 2017, the average imports of the US had reached $ 2,341 billion of which only $ 3.4 billions from Algeria, which ranks as the 57th largest supplier country in the United States.
Mr. Chiti also said that 62% of US imports come from four (4) African countries, namely South Africa (23%), Nigeria (21.1%), Algeria (10%) and Angola (7.8%).
Over the past six (6) years, he continued, average Algerian exports to US reached $ 5.1 billion, peaking at $ 11 billion in 2012.
The sectoral breakdown of Algerian sales in favor of the US market shows that the hydrocarbon sector remains dominant, with 3.3 billion dollars, or 98.9% of total Algerian exports to US.
On the other hand, Algerian petroleum products imports from the US account for only 5% of its total imports ($ 86 million).
In the industrial sector, it accounts for only 1% ($ 34 million) of all Algerian sales to the US market.
As for Algerian industrial products imports, it accounts for a significant share, 78%, (1.4 billion dollars).
They consist mainly of radar and radiosonde devices, aircraft and other air vehicles, chemical pulp of coniferous wood.
The agri-food sector absorbs only a tiny part of Algerian sales in the US, precisely $ 2.6 million, consisting mainly of dates with 98%. In addition to dates, Algeria also exports to this market carobs, gasified waters and groundnut oil and its fractions.
Algeria's purchases of agri-food products from US market account for only 17% of its total purchases from this market ($ 1.4 billion).
These figures demonstrate that there is a large trade imbalance.
For his part, Chikhoune said that Italians, Spanish and Greeks are the most aggressive exporters to US.
He regretted, as a result, the scarcity of the Algerian product in the Communities markets (Arab and Muslim). According to him, the few products sold in US go through Canada.
On the few attempts to export to the US market, Mr. Chikhoune pointed out that these operations have not last long, due to lack of volume and quality.
According to him, the Algerian side should organize itself into a cooperative to avoid any break and win the trust of 350 million American consumers.
In this regard, he indicated that ALGEX and the USABC will prepare, from Washington D.C, a document to be presented to foreign direct investment (FDI), in order to facilitate the delivery of Algerian products to be exhibited in September in Washington D.C.
It should be noted that during the debates, the logistical problem was raised. And it is for this reason, the President of the Anisfer- Dry Port of Rouiba, Hamadou Mustapha, announced the upcoming establishment of a logistics base for exporters.
A small exhibition was organized in ALGEX, presenting samples of Algerian products.
During his visit, the US Ambassador in Algiers, John Desrocher, was keen to highlight that the Algerian product has a great chance to conquer the American market, given its high quality.
