President Tebboune participation in the Virtual Summit of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries chaired by Azerbaijan

President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune delivered a speech on Monday, may 4th 2020 to the participants in the Virtual Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries.

The Head of State claimed that “New Algeria in construction will remain faithful to its principles and commitments and will henceforth play its full role in Africa and in the World”. Furthermore, Mr. Tebboune highlighted the role of Non-Aligned Countries in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for solidarity and cooperation on an international scale, and the relevance of the role of multilateralism in these circumstances. He also mentioned the experience of Algeria and the efforts it has made to prevent and stem the pandemic.

The President of the Republic also stressed the importance of pooling efforts to ensure that the repercussions of this pandemic on developing countries, particularly in Africa, are the least damaging possible and allow a recovery that will prevent them from 'be seriously shaken by the effects of the pandemic.

In this regard, he called on the United Nations Security Council to adopt a resolution as soon as possible, solemnly calling for an immediate end to all hostilities around the world, in particular in Libya, without omitting the countries living under occupation like Palestine and Western Sahara.

Convened by Azerbaijan in his capacity as President of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, and placed under the theme "United against COVID-19", the Summit addressed two themes, namely international solidarity in the context of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, and the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, celebrated on April 24 of each year.

The Summit adopted a Political Declaration through which the Movement emphasized the importance of international solidarity in the specific context of the fight against Covid-19 and called for the strengthening of multilateralism in that it is the right approach to achieve post-pandemic economic and social stability and development.

Therefore, the Movement has decided to create a Task Force which will be responsible, in particular, for the establishment of a common database gathering the medical, social and humanitarian needs of the Member States within the framework of the fight against Covid-19 and allowing the exchange of good practices in this area.
