Under the last amendment to the Constitution, a National Human Rights Council has been instituted highlighting and underscoring government’s efforts to advance human rights in Algeria.
This entity was created by the Constitution, in replacement to the national Consultative Commission for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights, that had only a consultative role.
The Council has been set up under the authority of the President of the Republic with the mission of monitoring, early warning and assessment on human rights issues.
It can examine and/or instigate on cases of violation of Human Rights and it is able to initiate legal proceedings. It submits recommendations and proposals regarding the Human rights promotion.
