Algeria-Russia: "Great convergence" on conflicts, crises in region
APS - 19 April 2017
ALGIERS- Algeria and Russia underlined Tuesday, in Algiers, “great convergence” of their respective positions on conflicts and crises in the region, particularly the latest development in Libya, Syria, Mali, Sahel and Western Sahara, said a communiqué of Foreign Affairs Ministry.
This position was expressed on the occasion of the holding of the 2nd Algerian-Russian consultations on security and counterterrorism issues.
The two delegations were led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel and representative of the Security Council of the Russian Federation (SCRF) Venediktov Alexandre, respectively.
The two sides exchanged their analyses and positions on conflicts and crises affecting the region, particularly the latest developments in Libya, Syria, Mali, Sahel and Western Sahara, said the communiqué.
Algeria and Russia underlined a “great convergence” of their respective positions on these issues as well as their “commitment to achieving a solution to the crises and conflicts through dialogue, negotiation and national reconciliation without foreign interference.”
In this regard, the Russian delegation welcomed Algeria’s “praiseworthy efforts” for its immediate neighbourhood, notably Libya to “reach a political solution negotiated by the Libyan themselves, based on the respect of sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of this country and on the cohesion of its people,” added the source.
The two delegations pointed out, on this occasion, “the growing terrorist threat at the regional and international levels, including cyber-terrorism and cyber criminality.”
“While welcoming the quality of the coordination at the bilateral and multilateral levels in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, notably in the United Nations and the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), they expressed their serious concern about the threats of foreign terrorists on the security and stability of States as well as international peace and security. In this regard, they stressed the need for a supported regional and international cooperation to face it,” added the source.
The Algerian side welcomed “the efforts made by Russia in the fight against terrorism and its contribution to the struggle of the international community to face this scourge.”
