Western Sahara conflict resolution: Mogherini reiterates EU's "resolute support" to UN efforts
APS - 09 January 2018
BRUSSELS-High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the EU Commission Federica Mogherini on Tuesday reiterated the European Union's resolute support to the efforts made by the Union Nations to "ensure the self-determination" of the Sahrawi people and address this longstanding conflict.
"Mogherini emphasized EU's resolute support for the UN's renewed efforts, in the spirit of recent UNSC resolutions and in particular the latest UNSC resolution of 28 April 2017, to help bring to a conclusion this long-standing conflict," EU's diplomatic services said in a communiqué following a meeting in Brussels with Mogherini and the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Western Sahara Horst Kohler.
During the meeting, Mogherini reaffirmed EU's determination to "achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of arrangements consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the UN." The EU official highlighted that "not only the parties in the dispute stand to gain from a definitive peace agreement, but so do all countries in the region as would the EU."
"The EU has long argued in favour of increased regional cooperation and would be willing to consider with all interested stakeholders ways to promote regional and cross-border cooperation so as to enhance regional development," stressed Mogherini.
