ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum held discussions in Abuja with the chairman of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, the ministry said in a statement.
"On the sidelines of the official visit to Abuja, he began on 25 November 2020, Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum had a meeting with the chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou," the ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
It is the first official visit of an Algerian minister to the West African organization, according to the statement.
Both parties have conducted a very fruitful exchange of views on the main issues of the region, it added.
During the discussions, attended by several ECOWAS senior executives, the statement said, "Boukadoum and Kassi Brou had a constructive and open discussion on ways and means to promote cooperation between Algeria and the West African organization in the political and security fields, especially in the Sahel region."
"Both parties noted, with great satisfaction, a convergence of views on the main issues concerning the region and agreed on the need to pool their efforts through the establishment of a consultation mechanism between Algeria and ECOWAS," the statement noted.
The mechanism is mainly aimed at "developing political, security, economic and commercial ties."
