Western Sahara: Spain reiterates support for UN solution

MADRID- Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, reiterated his country's support for the efforts of the new UN envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, while stressing his position in favor of a political solution that would allow the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.

During a press conference with his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mehmud Qureshi, the head of Spanish diplomacy reiterated Spain's support to the efforts of the new personal envoy of the UN Secretary-

General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who will begin this week his first tour in the region to discuss with the parties to the conflict (Polisario Front and Morocco), reported Tuesday the agency Europa Press.

Regarding this conflict, "which has lasted so long," Albares said that Spain supports a "political, just and mutually acceptable solution" within the framework of the United Nations.

The Spanish official stressed, moreover, that Spain and Morocco were trying to build "a 21st-century relationship" and clearly stated that he was not satisfied with the talks he held with his Moroccan counterpart regarding irregular immigration.
