Western Sahara: Trump's decision is mistake that can be corrected

APS - 02 February 2021

ALGIERS- Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton said that the decision of former US president Donald Trump, recognizing the alleged sovereignty of Morocco over Western Sahara, is a mistake, because it doesn't reflect the American long-standing policy, underlining that it can be corrected.

In an interview granted to the Algerian Center of Economic Diplomacy (CADE), Bolton said that Trump's administration had made the mistake of recognizing Morocco's alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara.

It is a mistake because, he said, it led to further tension and danger in North Africa and Sahel at a time when we should try to resolve the issue and restore stability.

In this regard, he pointed out that he contributed to the drafting of the resolution of the Security Council in 1991 according to which the United Nations Mission for the referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was created, he said.

The mission's objective wasn't only to monitor the ceasefire between the Polisario and Morocco but especially to organize the referendum in order to resolve the status of the territory of Western Sahara.
