ALGIERS- A total of 149 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus (Covid-19), 137 recoveries and seven deaths have been recorded over the past 24 hours in Algeria, the spokesman of the scientific committee for monitoring the progress of the coronavirus pandemic, Djamel Fourar, said Monday in Algiers.
The number of confirmed cases nationwide, since the outset of the outbreak, has reached 11 920, or 27cases per 100.000 inhabitants, that of deaths to 852 and that of recovered patients to 8559, Fourar said in his daily press briefing about the progress of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He noted that people aged 60 years old and above account for 75% of the death toll, adding that four deaths out of seven had been suffering from chronic diseases.
Thirty-one provinces have had a rate (of Covid-19 cases) below the national rate, while 12 others have recorded no positive cases over the past 24 hours.
The number of patients having received the current treatment protocol (based on hydroxychloroquine) is 25 598, the health official said, adding that 39 patients are still under intensive care.
Doctor Djamel Fourar stressed that wearing protective masks is mandatory and a national duty as well as a responsible behaviour, in order to reduce the spread of the virus.
